WEBINAR – Novel opportunities for the development of biorefineries
IEA BIOENERGY WEBINAR – Novel opportunities for the development of biorefineries: bio-carbon to chemicals and fuels by Integration of biorefineries and green hydrogen
Biorefinery processes can have a main role in the energy transition to a 100% green industry. IEA Bioenergy Task 42 (biorefining in a circular economy) recently provided an updated version of its global interactive web-GIS portal “Biorefinery Atlas”, including localization, sizes and central bio-based processes. The production green hydrogen could provide opportunities in bio-based value chains to further reduce the carbon footprint of pathways to produce biofuels and bio-based products. Notoriously one main constraint of hydrogen is storage and transport. In particular, green hydrogen through renewable electricity holds the characteristic of being a local resource and this is a common feature of biomass. Using green hydrogen in biorefineries could offer the advantage of allowing a local integration, thereby reducing costs and environmental impacts due to long transportation routes. The webinar will present databases and case studies as tools to assess the biorefinery developments worldwide and future opportunities through the integration of bioeconomy and hydrogen economy.
